We commemorate the martyrdom of the chief of the martyrs, the
grandson of the prophet, the son of Ali, the nephew of Hamza, the
brother of Hassan, the son of Fatima, the father of imam zainul abideen,
the uncle of Qasim, the brother of Abu Al Fadhl Al Abbas, the husband of
Umme Layla and Umme Farwa, the third imam of Islam, and a devout
worshipper and believer of Allah [swt], imam Hussain (as), during
Muharram.. The tragic month in which he was mercilessly slain.
People might say - Yes he died, but so did many other people - loads
died for the sake of God, why do we dedicate so much time to mourn
Hussain? Simple. Imam Hussain was martyred like no other man, emitted
his last breaths like no other man, and so died like no other man.
imam Baqir (as) has said: 'He who remembers us, or in whose presence we
are remembered, and as a result tears flow from his eyes even though
they may be in the measure of a wing of a mosquito, Allah shall
construct for him a house in Paradise and make the tears a barrier
between him and the fire of hell'.
Is it really odd for imam Hussain to hold all the mental virtues in his
unparalleled personality, when his forefathers, father, mother, brothers
and sisters were all models of human perfection? Therefore, can such a
person with such high moral standards, be wrong, when a DRUNKEN
alcoholic, who knew of Nothing but worldly desires, a person like Yazid
ibn Muawwiyah, be correct? It is illogical!
A man claiming to be the follower of the prophet yet does not listen to
him? Did the prophet not say he was one of the chiefs of the youth of
paradise?
Did imam Sadiq (AS) not say that the sky cried for 40 days over the
martyrdom of Hussain?
Did imam Ridha (AS) not say that imam Hussain was surely slaughtered in
the manner in which a ram is slaughtered?
Did imam Baqir (AS) not say that the humans, jinn’s, birds, and all the
wild beasts mourned and wept over the tragedy which befell Hussain ibn
Ali?
Do we STILL deny the significance of Karbala? That unfortunately we
would NOT be who we ARE today, that Islam would have disappeared! But
Allah would never have allowed that, and neither would the imam. He knew
what would happen, he knew... but it was still his own choice, he had
the freewill. And the decision he took was the most noble and greatest
decision ever.
Imam Sadiq (AS) while sitting on a prayer mat, prayed for the mourners
of Hussain, as he said:
‘O Lord have mercy upon those eyes which have shed tears in compassion
for us; and upon those hearts which have been restless and blistered for
us; and upon those wailings which have been for us’.
